‘Lisbon Lions’ at the National Football Museum

Visitors to Preston’s National Football Museum on Friday (22 August) had the rare chance of meeting members of the first British winners of the European Cup.

Six of the surviving eight members of the champion Celtic team, nicknamed the ‘Lisbon Lions’, lined up to meet visitors, sign autographs and pose for photos.

The ‘Lions’ were the first British team to win the European Cup, defeating Inter Milan 2 – 1 in a thrilling final in 1967.  The line up on Friday included captain Billy McNeil and goal scorers Tommy Gemmill and Stevie Charlmers.

Kevin Moore, Museum Director said: “It’s a real honour for us to welcome the Lisbon Lions.  They’re an iconic team with a great story to tell."
